The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Capesize bulk carrier CAPE DAO (IMO 9219020) was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz at around 06:30 UTC on 23 September.

The impact reportedly caused a fire in the engine-room area, leaving the vessel disabled and adrift. The crew subsequently abandoned the ship.

Omani authorities later confirmed that one seafarer was killed, while at least one other casualty was reported. The Royal Navy of Oman was involved in the evacuation of the crew and subsequent rescue operation.

CAPE DAO is a 2002-built, approximately 170,000 dwt Capesize bulk carrier.

Initial maritime security reports described the weapon involved only as an “unknown projectile”. Some subsequent reports have referred to a possible torpedo attack, but this has not yet been fully confirmed by official maritime security authorities.

The incident adds to mounting concerns over the safety of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, particularly as attacks on merchant vessels continue to affect effective vessel supply, voyage planning, insurance costs and risk premiums across the tanker and dry bulk markets.

Further clarification will now be closely watched regarding the nature of the attack, responsibility for the incident and the condition of the vessel.
