SunRui to Supply Rotor Sail Systems for Two 7,100DWT Self-Unloading Bulk Carriers
Qingdao, China – July 11, 2026 – Qingdao SunRui Marine Environment Engineering Co., Ltd. (SunRui) has signed a contract with Jiangsu Suhao Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. to supply wind-assisted rotor sail systems for two 7,100DWT self‑unloading bulk carriers. The signing ceremony took place on July 9, attended by Mr. Xun Jinbiao, General Manager of Suhao Shipbuilding, Mr. Xu Fuqiang, Deputy General Manager, Mr. Mao Yingjian, Chairman of China Shipbuilding Trading Shanghai, and Mr. Yu Jiangshui, General Manager of SunRui.
The two vessels are being built for the well‑known Norwegian short‑sea bulk carrier owner Halten Bulk. Each ship will be equipped with two tilting‑type rotor sails measuring 4 metres in diameter and 28 metres in height. With a maximum rotational speed of 225 rpm, each unit can deliver a thrust of up to 215 kN, enabling the vessels to make maximum use of wind energy as a renewable power source. Delivery of the rotor sail systems is scheduled to start in 2027, in line with the newbuilding programme.
Expanding wind‑assisted propulsion portfolio
SunRui has been accelerating its presence in the wind‑assisted ship propulsion sector in recent years. The company has established a world‑class R&D, manufacturing and testing platform for large‑scale rotor sails, and has developed a diversified product range covering both rotor sails and wing sails. Having secured firm orders for various vessel types, the wind‑assisted propulsion system is now regarded as another flagship product for SunRui, following its successful Ballast Water Management Systems and clean energy supply systems for ships.
“SunRui’s capabilities in R&D, design, production and delivery are widely recognised in the industry,” said Mr. Xun Jinbiao. “We are confident that they will ensure the high‑quality delivery of the contracted equipment, and we look forward to further cooperation in the development and application of new green technologies.”
Mr. Mao Yingjian commented, “This signing marks an important milestone for the three parties to achieve mutual benefit. We will continue to expand and deepen our collaboration in the field of green shipping.”
Mr. Yu Jiangshui expressed his sincere gratitude to the clients for their trust, stating: “SunRui will mobilise its best resources to deliver superior products and ensure successful project execution. We hope to take this opportunity to broaden our cooperation and jointly contribute to the green transition of the shipping industry.”
Looking ahead, SunRui said it will remain innovation‑driven, continuously developing new technologies and products, and refining its integrated green‑ship solutions to support the sustainable development of global shipping.
