AI Alone Won't Change Behaviour. The Triple AI Will.

Every conference stage this year has carried some version of the same slide: AI is transforming shipping. Predictive maintenance, autonomous routing, generative copilots, agentic workflows — the vocabulary has moved faster than the industry's ability to absorb it. And yet, walk onto a bridge, into an ops room, or through a chartering desk, and the honest answer to "has AI actually changed how you act?" is, more often than not, "not really."
This is not a technology problem. It is a sequencing problem.
AI, on its own, cannot precipitate a change in action. It can generate insight, forecast, and summary at a speed and scale no human can match — but insight is not action, and dashboards are not decisions. What sits between a model's output and a master's, a charterer's, or a superintendent's next move is a chain that AI alone does not complete. I have come to think of that chain as the Triple AI: three A's working in tandem with three I's.
The Three A's: Awareness, Assessment, Action
Awareness is the starting condition — knowing that something relevant exists, is changing, or is at risk. A vessel approaching a strait under geopolitical tension. A charter party clause exposed by a new toll regime. A crew member's fatigue pattern drifting outside safe limits. Awareness is not intelligence; it is simply the state of not being blind to what is happening.
Assessment is where awareness becomes judgement. It asks: what does this mean for me, for this voyage, for this counterparty, for this P&L line? Assessment is contextual and comparative — it weighs the new signal against history, exposure, and alternatives.
Action is the commercial or operational decision that follows — reroute, hedge, renegotiate, escalate, stand down. Action is the only one of the three that actually moves the needle. It is also the one that AI, by itself, cannot take, because action carries accountability, and accountability cannot be outsourced to a model.
The Three I's: Information, Integration, Instinct
Information is the raw material — AIS data, market rates, sanctions lists, weather routing, sensor feeds, news wires. There has never been a shortage of information in shipping. If anything, the industry drowns in it.
Integration is what turns scattered information into something usable. This is the unglamorous, infrastructural layer that most AI conversations skip past entirely — connecting ship to shore, system to system, department to department, so that the same version of the truth is available to the seafarer executing the deal and the commercial team that concluded it ashore. Without integration, information stays fragmented, and fragmented information cannot be assessed with any confidence.
Instinct is the least discussed and most decisive of the six. Instinct is not a mystical shortcut — it is knowledge, experience, and pattern-recognition compressed by years into something that fires faster than deliberate analysis. A master who has weathered a dozen tense transits, a chartering veteran who has seen freight cycles turn before the indices confirm it — their instinct is a model trained on decades of real stakes, not a training set. AI can inform instinct. It cannot replace it, and it should not try to.
How the Two Triads Interlock
The two sets are not parallel — they feed each other, sequentially.
Information, filtered through Awareness, is what tells someone that a situation has changed and merits attention. Raw data without awareness is noise; awareness without data is guesswork.
Integration is what makes Assessment possible. You cannot properly assess a risk or an opportunity if the relevant systems — commercial, operational, connectivity, crew welfare — don't talk to each other. This is precisely the layer where most maritime organisations are weakest, and it is precisely the layer that determines whether Assessment produces a considered judgement or a partial guess.
Instinct is what converts Assessment into Action. Once the picture is integrated and assessed, it is instinct — built over years of knowledge, experience, and gut-feel — that makes the final call under time pressure, incomplete information, and commercial consequence. This is the step AI cannot own, because instinct is inseparable from accountability, and accountability sits with a person, not a model.
Put together: Information + Awareness → Assessment, sharpened by Integration → Instinct-based Action. Skip any one link, and the chain breaks. An organisation can have the best AI model in the industry and still see no change in action, because the model was never plugged into an integrated system, or because the people meant to act on it were never made aware in the first place.
Where FrontM Fits
This is the gap FrontM exists to close. FrontM's role in the Triple AI is not to be the AI — it is to be the Integration layer that makes the rest of the chain possible.
Seafarers are commercial actors. They are executing, in real time, the same deals that were concluded ashore — freight decisions, charter obligations, port calls, cargo commitments — yet they have historically been equipped with a fraction of the connectivity, information access, and system integration available to their commercial counterparts on land. That asymmetry is not a welfare footnote; it is a direct constraint on Assessment and Action at the point where they matter most — on the vessel, in the moment.
FrontM's connectivity and integration architecture exists to correct that asymmetry: bringing ship and shore onto a common information layer, so that Awareness reaches the right person at the right time, so that Assessment can draw on integrated rather than fragmented data, and so that the instinct of an experienced master or officer is finally acting on a full picture rather than a partial one. Without that integration layer, the Information sitting in a dozen disconnected systems never becomes Awareness that reaches the ship, and Assessment is left guessing at what it doesn't know it's missing.
This is the argument for why solutions like FrontM are not adjacent to the AI conversation — they are prerequisite to it. If we do not put integration solutions into the mix, the change in action that the industry is hoping AI will deliver simply does not happen. The model can be brilliant and still change nothing, because nothing connects its output to the person who has to act.
The Value Is in the Efficiency, Not the Algorithm
The industry's real objective was never "adopt AI." It was always to generate value through greater efficiency — fewer wasted transits, better-hedged exposure, faster and better-informed decisions at sea and ashore. AI alone will not get us there. It takes the full Triple AI — Awareness, Assessment, and Action, built on Information, Integration, and Instinct — working as one system, with technology doing what it does best and human judgement doing what only it can.
