Hormuz Crisis Escalates: Trump Announces New Measures Targeting Iran, Proposes 20% Charge on Cargo Transiting the Strait
Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have escalated again.
On 13 July, US President Donald Trump said the United States would reinstate a blockade targeting Iran and announced plans to impose a 20% charge on all cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump said the Strait remains open and that the US would continue to ensure freedom of navigation. He added that the measures would focus on Iranian vessels or customers, while other countries would continue to have access to the waterway.
However, no detailed implementation plan has been released, including how the proposed charge would be collected, who would pay it, and under what legal framework it would operate.
Iran has strongly rejected any US involvement in managing the Strait of Hormuz, stating that it will not allow foreign interference in the strategic waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, handling a significant share of global oil and LNG shipments. Any disruption could have immediate implications for tanker markets, energy trade, insurance costs, and global supply chains.
The maritime industry is closely monitoring further developments.
