After years of relative inactivity, pirate assaults off Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden have markedly intensified, and vessels transiting these waters are urged to raise security alert levels.
UKMTO released Warning #118‑26 on 20 August 2026, reporting the hijacking of an oil tanker east of Al Mukalla, Yemen, in the Gulf of Aden. Armed boarders seized full control of the vessel and forced it to sail toward Somalia. Three days prior, a general‑cargo ship was hijacked off the Somali coast.
Per the UKMTO warning, the west‑bound product tanker sent a distress alert on VHF‑16 after being approached by unauthorised small craft around 136 nautical miles east of Al Mukalla. Six armed men boarded and took over the ship. Authorities are investigating. Vessel‑tracking data strongly indicates the hijacked ship is the Eritrean‑flagged product tanker SIBU 1 (IMO: 9204776).

Its AIS signal vanished at 12:44 local time on 20 August. Reports note a temporary “PIRATE ONBOARD” AIS alert, followed by tampered AIS destination data showing Port Sudan. Built in 2001, the handy‑size tanker has a deadweight tonnage of 32 238 DWT.
Three days before the SIBU 1 incident, UKMTO issued Notice #114 concerning another hijacking. On 17 August, eight armed men boarded and seized the Cameroonian‑flagged general‑cargo ship LUTUF (IMO: 9109134) about four nautical miles south of Mareeyo, Somalia. The vessel’s Company Security Officer (CSO) confirmed takeover. Its AIS was switched off and its whereabouts remain unknown. LUTUF is a multi‑purpose general‑cargo vessel of 1 401 DWT.

On 17 July, small tanker MT‑ASANA was also boarded and seized in the Gulf of Aden.
These three successive hijackings signal a tangible resurgence of Somali piracy. Unlike Houthi strikes in the Red Sea targeting Israel‑linked shipping, Somali pirate groups aim to seize vessels and crews for ransom, attacking merchant ships indiscriminately.
Ambrey Analytics warned as early as June that pirate‑action groups (PAGs) around Somalia and the Gulf of Aden had grown more active and aggressive, with armed‑fire attacks becoming commonplace and maritime‑security risks rising sharply.

Maritime Safety Recommendations for Ship Operators

1.Follow best‑management‑practice guidance for transiting the Gulf of Aden and Somali coastal waters. Prefer recommended high‑speed, offshore‑transit routes keeping well clear of the coast.

2.Strengthen on‑board security watches; maintain continuous VHF‑16 listening watch, constant radar and AIS monitoring, and harden physical anti‑boarding defences.

3.Update and implement the Ship Security Plan (SSP), and prepare contingency protocols for distress signalling and loss‑of‑communications scenarios.

4.If suspicious small craft approach, raise the distress alarm immediately and notify UKMTO, vessel‑owner security teams and nearby naval assets.
