India and the European Union have launched an industry coalition to develop a green shipping corridor linking Indian ports with European markets, with a focus on green ammonia and methanol.

The initiative was formally announced at the Sagarmanthan 2026 maritime conference in New Delhi on October 7, where a letter of intent was signed to advance cooperation on low-emission shipping and green fuel supply chains.

The India-EU Green Shipping Corridor Coalition aims to connect India's potential for producing green marine fuels with growing European demand, bringing together fuel producers, shipping companies, port operators and other industry stakeholders.

The coalition will assess fuel supply and demand, infrastructure requirements and commercial opportunities for establishing viable green shipping routes between India and Europe.

V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority is among the participating stakeholders, while energy transition organisation RMI will serve as a technical partner. The initiative will also explore cooperation with European receiving ports and industrial fuel buyers.

The coalition follows a pre-feasibility study launched in 2025 and is intended to move the proposed corridor towards commercial implementation.

India has identified three major ports — Deendayal Port at Kandla, Paradip Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port at Tuticorin — as green hydrogen hubs to support the production, storage and bunkering of alternative marine fuels.

The Indian government is also targeting a renewable energy share of more than 60% at major ports by 2030, rising to over 90% by 2047.
