Breaking: Japanese Ro-Ro vessel NIRAIKANAI II runs aground off Toshima Island
A Japanese-flagged Ro-Ro cargo/vehicle carrier, NIRAIKANAI II, reportedly ran aground at around 03:30 on June 19 while transiting waters west of Toshima Island, part of Japan’s Izu Islands.
The vessel is operated by Ryukyu Kaiun Kaisha and is understood to be about 181 metres in length. It was carrying vehicles and trailers on a voyage from Osaka to Tokyo when the incident occurred.
There were 17 crew members on board. According to the operator’s update, no injuries have been reported, and no oil pollution has been confirmed so far.
The incident has been reported to Japan’s 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, and the cause remains under investigation.
