China’s Hengli Heavy Industries has announced shipbuilding agreements with several major international container lines for 52 ultra-large LNG dual-fuel containerships, representing a combined nominal capacity of 1.124 million TEU. The package comprises twenty 19,000 TEU vessels, twelve 22,000 TEU vessels and twenty 24,000 TEU vessels, according to the company’s announcement on 23 October 2026.www.imarinenews.com

The Dalian-based shipbuilder has not identified the customers, disclosed contract values or provided delivery schedules. Recent market reports linking MSC and Maersk to projects at Hengli overlap with parts of the announced vessel mix, but neither carrier has been confirmed as a buyer within this particular 52-ship package.

MSC and Maersk reports offer clues to the buyers

The twenty 24,000 TEU vessels have attracted attention because of recent reports concerning MSC’s investment at Hengli. In its 20 October market report, Linerlytica said MSC had reportedly placed an additional order for twenty ships of this size. TradeWinds subsequently reported on 22 October that the carrier’s latest arrangement involved ten additional newbuildings and upgrades to ten existing orders, describing an investment of approximately $2.5 billion. The reports point towards further MSC activity at the yard, while differing on how much represents additional ships and how much involves changes to earlier contracts.www.linerlytica.com

Hengli’s disclosure of twenty 24,000 TEU vessels is consistent with the size and number of ships discussed in those reports. However, the announcement provides no customer allocation and does not explain whether the agreements include amendments to existing orders. The precise relationship between the reported MSC programme and the newly announced package therefore remains unconfirmed.

Maersk is another possible customer identified in earlier market reporting. Reports in September linked the Danish carrier to discussions with Hengli for up to twenty-four containerships of around 19,000 TEU. Subsequent reports suggested that the yard could build twenty vessels of approximately 18,600 TEU for Maersk. Those figures overlap with Hengli’s newly disclosed tranche of twenty 19,000 TEU ships, although the slightly different capacity descriptions and the absence of a named customer prevent a definitive match.www.marineinsight.com

For now, the reports provide context and possible corroboration on vessel numbers and sizes. The allocation of the 52 ships among individual owners, and their relationship to previously reported contracts or upgrades, still await confirmation from the parties involved.

Established MSC cooperation moves into construction

Hengli’s existing relationship with MSC provides a documented background to the latest speculation. On 23 August 2024, the two groups signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement in Geneva covering newbuilding construction, engines, ship repairs and retrofits. That relationship has since progressed into the construction of ultra-large dual-fuel containerships.epaper.hengli.com

On 16 October, Hengli floated out its first two 21,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships being built for MSC. Both vessels were constructed in the same dock and left it on the same day. The design measures 380 metres in length and 58.6 metres in beam, with Hengli-produced dual-fuel main engines and a 13,000-cubic-metre Type C fuel tank. Two further sisterships were also advancing in an adjacent dock, according to local reporting.szb.dltv.cn

These vessels belong to Hengli’s established construction programme with MSC. Their progress offers a practical indication of the yard’s developing capabilities in large hull construction, machinery supply and fuel-tank integration. The first ships will also provide experience for subsequent vessels as they proceed through outfitting, commissioning, sea trials and delivery.

In-house engines and fuel tanks expand the scope of the orders

Hengli says all 52 vessels in the newly announced package will use LNG dual-fuel main engines and LNG fuel tanks produced in-house. The agreements therefore create corresponding demand for machinery and fuel-storage equipment alongside the hull construction work.www.imarinenews.com

For a programme of this scale, the potential benefit lies in coordinating equipment manufacture with the wider shipbuilding schedule. Engine availability, tank fabrication and installation all need to align with hull assembly and subsequent commissioning. Bringing these activities within the same industrial group can support earlier coordination of technical interfaces and production milestones. Any resulting advantage in cost or delivery performance will depend on consistent execution across the individual manufacturing operations.

Series construction offers a further opportunity to apply experience from the first vessels to later ships. Repeated designs allow engineering decisions, production methods and installation procedures to be refined across a programme. At the same time, working for several customers introduces different specifications and delivery requirements that must be managed alongside the common features of each series.

Hengli is already operating with a substantial workload. Liaoning Daily reported on 17 October that the shipbuilder had started construction on more than 200 vessels since its establishment and that its orderbook extended into 2030. Those figures describe the yard’s wider business; delivery dates for the newly announced 52-ship package have yet to be disclosed.www.ln.gov.cn

Fleet investment meets an expanding global orderbook

The announcement comes as container lines continue to commit capital to future fleets despite a growing volume of ships already on order. Linerlytica’s 20 October report put the global containership orderbook at approximately 16.2 million TEU, equivalent to 46.5% of the existing fleet—a ratio at its highest since 2009. These commitments will influence the balance between fleet renewal and additional transport capacity over the coming years.www.linerlytica.com

For owners, ordering large dual-fuel ships involves several decisions at once: replacing older vessels, securing delivery positions, managing charter commitments and selecting ships suited to future networks. Larger vessels can offer economies of scale when cargo volumes and port rotations support high utilisation. Their commercial performance will also depend on fuel costs and availability, voyage efficiency and the timing of deployment.

For shipbuilders, large series provide sustained work but require dependable coordination across design, procurement, dock operations and commissioning. Hengli’s first 21,000 TEU ships and the newly announced agreements show the scale of its involvement in this market. Its ability to translate that business into repeatable deliveries will be central to its relationships with international owners.

Across the industry, the returns on these investments will depend on how deliveries are phased into operating fleets, how much older capacity leaves the market and how trade demand develops. More efficient ships can improve fleet competitiveness, while disciplined deployment remains essential as the global newbuilding programme continues to grow.
