The first ice-class cargo ship developed by China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited has a unique way of ensuring voyage safety, with all movable items on board fastened to make sure that they will not fall down to cause material damage or personnel injury during the voyage.
Tian En, carrying exports for wind power equipment, set sail from east China's Lianyungang City in Jiangsu Province to a European port on Saturday. It will sail through the Western Pacific, and across the Bering Strait and the Arctic Ocean before finally arriving in the European Strait. The voyage will cover 18,520 kilometers and last more than 30 days.
From cooking utensils to chairs, computers and decoration flowers, they are all fixed in case of strong winds and high tides, reducing possible damage to the devices and injury to people on board the ship.
"During the voyage, if there are strong winds and high tides, they are easy to fall and hurt us, so we have to fasten them. It is dangerous if they shake heavily during the voyage," said Shi Jinting, chief chef on board Tian En.
"These disinfection cupboards and refrigerators should be fixed. If not, they will fall when the ship shakes during the voyage and thus damage themselves and other devices and hurt people. In addition, we arrange checks during the voyage. If we find any loose items, we will fasten them. Especially whenever there is bad weather with strong winds and high tides, we will send personnel to check these devices one by one and fix them again," said Yan Fengxiang, political commissar on board Tian En.
The voyage comes as part of China's efforts to build an "Ice Silk Road" with other countries by opening the Arctic shipping routes. This year marks the fifth anniversary of launching the Belt and Road Initiative, namely, the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The initiative is aimed at building a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along ancient trade routes.
