AMSA bans Shandong bulker over crew pay,what’s the inside story??

 

The Clarification of “Bulk carrier banned for underpaying crew”

 
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has banned the Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier MV Shandong Hai Wang for 12 months after it was discovered that crew had been deliberately underpaid. 

 

On Friday 6 July AMSA received information from the International Transport Workers’ Federation alleging discrepancies in the payment of crew wages. AMSA surveyors boarded the ship on arrival in Gladstone on Saturday 7 July to investigate the allegations. 

 

During the inspection, the surveyors found evidence that crew had been deliberately underpaid by about $56,000 (AUD) from the amount specified in their seafarer employment agreements.  

  

All outstanding wages had been received by the crew on thursday 12 July. And the ship has been released from detention and issued with a direction notice banning its return to Australian ports for 12 months. 

 

According to Xinde Marine News,Shandong Hai Wang is managed by Qilu Ship Management Co. Limited. 

 

One of the spoke woman told Xinde Marine News ，“we were always been paying the crew on schedule and has never been in arrears. However, the “underpaying crew” was because the wages of Filipino seafarers had to be paid on their behalf by their Philippine labor dispatch company. The crew later said that he only wanted to express his opinions and did not think of this serious consequences. He expressed his willingness to actively cooperate with the investigation, and tell the truth.

 

And Qilu Ship Management Co. Limited said after the arrest event that they will strengthen the  management of foreign seafarers, improving the paying way of seafarers’ salary. They will protect the interests and rights of crew and meet the demands of ITF to eliminate the harmful effect.
