Classification society ABS has successfully completed a pilot project using 3D digital models to carry out surveys.
The pilot was carried out with the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO). Surveyors used 3D digital models instead of traditional 2D drawings to simulate new construction surveys on several steel blocks.
According to ABS, 3D models can save up to 25 per cent of design time by eliminating 2D drawings. They are also thought to be easier to navigate and reduce time required to train shipyard craftsmen.
