Hong Kong Shipowners Association 60th Anniversary

Mr. Xu Jigao was elected as the new chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, Mr. Zhu Jianhui and Mr. Su Xingang were elected as vice-chairman, Mr. Tung Chee Hwa as vice chairman, Mrs Carrie Lam as chief executive, Qiu Hong as deputy director, Song Ruan as deputy commissioner, China Shipowners Association executive vice president Zhang Shouguo and other personnel attended the meeting.

Carrie Lam called for setting up a separate statutory body for shipping at the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA) last night.

Jack Hsu, incoming new chairman of the HKSOA, said "We hope the government will create an independent, statutory maritime authority in order to improve our maritime competitiveness."

However, the suggestion may be difficult to realize according to sources.

The HKSOA was incorporated in 1957 by 11 local shipowners with the purpose of creating a forum for shipowners resident in Hong Kong. Over the past 60 years, the Association has grown into one of the world’s largest Shipowner Associations, its members owning, managing and operating a fleet with a combined carrying capacity of over 178 million deadweight tonnes.
