Seaspan Places Order for 12 New 9,000 TEU Vessels – Total of 67 New Ships All Built in China!

Seaspan, the world’s largest independent container ship owner, has made a significant move in the global shipping market by placing an order for 12 new 9,000 TEU container ships 15th Aug. These vessels will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), and will be powered by traditional fuel systems. The deal was finalized with cross-border RMB settlement, marking a major step in Seaspan's partnership with Chinese shipyards and the broader globalization of China's maritime industry.

This latest order, in addition to the 55 other ships already under construction at various Chinese shipyards, underscores Seaspan’s ongoing commitment to expanding its fleet. The 67 vessels, all being constructed in China, will enhance the company's capacity to meet growing demands for container shipping while adhering to stricter environmental regulations. These newbuilds range in size from 9,000 TEU to 17,000 TEU, with delivery expected from 2027 to 2029.

Seaspan's Growing Fleet & Global Partnerships

Seaspan’s current fleet consists of 182 vessels with a total capacity of 1.9 million TEU, and it has 42 more vessels under construction. The company recently completed a $2.8 billion sale-leaseback deal for 15 large container ships and four car carriers, further solidifying its financial strength.

In addition to its newbuild strategy, Seaspan has also partnered with Jiangsu Watt Energy Engineering Co. Ltd. to establish Huayue Marine Technology Co. Ltd., focusing on the green energy transformation of ships, including LNG, methanol, and ammonia-based retrofits. This strategic shift will play a key role in the decarbonization of the shipping industry over the next two to three years.

The Power of Chinese Shipbuilding

With 67 vessels being built in China, Seaspan continues to capitalize on the country’s manufacturing prowess and competitive pricing. This extensive partnership highlights the growing role of Chinese shipyards in the global maritime supply chain and underscores China’s strategic push for internationalization of its currency in cross-border shipping transactions.

As Seaspan strengthens its fleet, it is poised to maintain its leadership role in the global shipping industry, fostering collaboration across international supply chains and driving the industry’s green transition.
