Amid tightening environmental regulations, the feeder containership market is witnessing a significant surge in investment—but notably, shipowners are remaining cautious regarding alternative fuels.
According to the latest Clarkson Research data（till 25th July）, out of 92 feeder containership orders (900–5,000 TEU) placed globally this year, none opted for immediate adoption of alternative fuels such as methanol, ammonia, or LNG. Instead, 61 vessels are designed with traditional fuel systems, 14 are "LNG Ready," 10 "Methanol Ready," and 4 vessels feature dual "Ammonia + Methanol Ready" designs, reflecting future-proofing rather than immediate implementation.
This reveals a pragmatic industry approach: traditional fuel designs remain economically attractive, with retrofit readiness serving as a cautious compromise in the face of evolving green regulations.
