On June 18, a landmark contract was signed between Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) and Jiangnan Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), for the construction of a 20,000-cubic-meter LNG bunkering vessel.
This newbuild project represents a major step in SIPG’s mission to develop a world-class green and smart port and to strengthen Shanghai’s position as a leading international shipping and energy hub.
Designed by SDARI and built by Jiangnan, the vessel integrates global best-in-class LNG bunkering technologies.
It features full electric azimuth propulsion, cutting-edge LNG vapor management systems, and advanced smart ship functions.
Powered by BOG (boil-off gas) and equipped with energy-saving systems, the vessel is expected to reduce GHG emissions by ~25% and achieve near-zero SOx and PM emissions.
The vessel is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2027 and will significantly enhance Shanghai’s LNG fueling capabilities—supporting over 200 ship-to-ship bunkering operations conducted so far.
This project showcases strong collaboration between two state-owned giants, driving forward China’s clean energy transition in the maritime sector.
