Maersk to drop direct calls to New Zealand's Port Nelson xinde marine news 2018-12-28 13:53

MAERSK's Northern Star service between Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia and Auckland, New Zealand, that previously called at Port Nelson will no longer do so as announced in July, reports Fairfax media.

Container traffic through Nelson will now go via feeders to Tauranga with the Pacifica line to meet onward connections to overseas destinations.

Nelson is one of the smallest ports with the least volume and was heavily reliant on export cargoes, unlike other ports which had a more balanced trade, said Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Federation of NZ executive director Rosemarie Dawson, adding that New Zealand was-serviced in terms of the number of ports it has relative to market size.
