IMO’s Council – the administrative body of the organization – concluded its’ latest meeting with a decision to work on reforming several important ‘mechanisms’ that dictate how the IMO conducts its’ business.
The IMO Council Members have discussed reforms this week. The main topics were the election process for IMO Council, involvement of civil society organisations and questions on public openness and transparency.
The Danish Maritime Authority’s Director, Andreas Nordseth states: “The meeting this week has shown a considerable willingness amongst the IMO member states for reforms. From a Danish point of view, this is very positive. Although, the IMO is actually quite efficient, which we have seen with the first strategy on reduction of greenhouse gas, we still have to ensure that the organisation remains up to date on current work forms and standards for representation and transparency.”
Besides agreeing on moving forward on reform work, the IMO Council also agreed to extend the contract for the current Secretary General, Mr. Kitack Lim, for four more years. This means that he will continue as Secretary General until 2023 although this is pending approval of Council’s decision by the IMO Assembly in 2019.
