Chinese cargo ship sets sail from China to Europe xinde marine news 2018-08-06 14:02

Chinese cargo ship Tian En set sail from east China's Lianyungang City in Jiangsu Province to a European port on Saturday by the northeast passage of the Arctic shipping routes.

Tian En, which carries export products of wind power equipment, is the first ice-class cargo ship developed by China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited (COSCO). The ship will sail through the Western Pacific, across the Bering Strait, the Arctic Ocean and finally arrive at a European Strait. The voyage of Tian En will cover 18,520 kilometers and last more than 30 days. It is expected to arrive at the European port in early September.

"Tian En is the first of the three ice-class ships our company builds in Shanghai shipyard. It is also the first time to carry out mission on the Arctic shipping routes. Twelve days will be saved by the Arctic shipping routes than traditional routes and 300 tons of fuel oil will be saved," said Liang Jie, general manager of ship management department with COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Co., Ltd..

The setting off of the Tian En cargo ship is one part of China's efforts to build an "Ice Silk Road" with other countries by opening the Arctic shipping routes. This year marks the fifth anniversary of launching the Belt and Road Initiative. In the past five years, by following the principles of extensive consultation, joint efforts, and shared benefits, the Belt and Road construction has made great progress with deepened policy coordination, strengthened connectivity, improved trade, expanded financing and better people-to-people ties.
