On August 15, the “OOCL Kapok” was officially named at Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd., marking a historic moment for the China P&I Club (CPI). With the entry of this vessel into the Club’s protection and indemnity cover, CPI’s total entered tonnage has surpassed the 100 million gross ton milestone for the first time.
The ceremony was attended by prominent guests including former Minister of Transport Huang Zhendong, former Vice Minister of Transport and President of the China Institute of Navigation He Jianzhong, CPI Chairman Xu Lirong, COSCO SHIPPING Group Vice President Lin Ji, OOCL Chairman and CEO Tao Weidong, OOCL Chief Operating Officer Yip Kin-ping, and CPI General Manager Song Chunfeng, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Safety Administration, CPI Board members, member representatives, partners, and invited guests.
Chairman Xu Lirong expressed heartfelt thanks to government authorities, member shipowners, partners, and the entire CPI team, noting that surpassing 100 million GT marks a solid step forward in enhancing underwriting capacity and global service standards. It reinforces CPI’s position as the largest P&I club in Asia, further strengthens its global competitiveness, and boosts confidence to deepen cooperation and drive sustainable, high-quality growth in the maritime industry.
Since its establishment in 1984 with an initial entered tonnage of just 470,000 GT, CPI has grown at an average annual rate of 14%. Notably, since 2016, its P&I tonnage has surged by 161%. Looking ahead, CPI remains committed to its mutuality principles, expanding scale, enhancing global services, linking shipping with the wider maritime services value chain, and seizing opportunities from industry transformation — all towards the vision of becoming a world-class P&I club.
