CMA CGM to Power Dual-Fuel Fleet with Chinese Bio-Methanol from Taonan Xinde Marine News Pang Kai 2025-07-16 18:06

On July 15, at the commissioning ceremony of the Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd Taonan Wind-Biomass Coupled Green Methanol Demonstration Project, Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice President of Assets and Operations at CMA CGM, announced via video:

“We are incredibly excited to announce that our dual-fuel vessels will soon be powered with bio-methanol produced in Taonan.”

This milestone marks a major step forward in the global green energy supply chain. The first batch of bio-methanol—produced entirely from biomass and renewable electricity—has now rolled off the production line and is bound for Shanghai Port via intermodal transport, where it will be bunkered onto CMA CGM’s methanol-powered container ships.

Key Highlights:

Taonan facility Phase 1 capacity: 50,000 tonnes of green methanol per year.

Exclusive supply agreement with CMA CGM.

First delivery vessel: CMA CGM Iron, in service since March 2025.
Future fleet: At least 24 methanol dual-fuel ships by 2026, out of a total 154 due-fuel vessels ordered for delivery by 2029.
Ship names include: COBALT, ARGON, PLATINUM, MERCURY, HELIUM, KRYPTON, THORIUM, and more—each named after chemical elements.

This collaboration is part of a long-term strategy initiated in 2023 under a trilateral MoU signed during President Macron's state visit to China, involving CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping, and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd (SIPG).

In March 2025, CMA CGMShanghai International Port (Group) Co., LtdShanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd signed a comprehensive framework agreement covering bio-methanol production, transport, and bunkering, solidifying Shanghai's ambition to become a global green fuel bunkering hub.

Congratulations to Shanghai Electric, SIPG Energy, and CMA CGM for this landmark achievement that not only accelerates maritime decarbonization but also sets a blueprint for global green fuel integration.
