Maersk: “We're not expanding fleet capacity for the sake of it.” xinde marine news Chen Yang 2025-05-30 16:00

At a time when global carriers are fiercely racing to add more tonnage, Maersk stands apart — with a clear message: no strategic fleet expansion.

Speaking at the Maersk Logistics & Services Summit 2025, Greater China Area Managing Director Silvia Ding reaffirmed that Maersk’s focus is not on being the biggest, but on being the most reliable.

While Maersk’s total fleet capacity recently exceeded 4.5 million TEU — breaking past its earlier 440,000 TEU self-limit — Silvia emphasized this is not a shift in strategic intent, but a tactical response to new realities such as Red Sea disruptions and extended sailing times.

The core strategy remains unchanged: building a resilient, reliable and customer-centric integrated logistics network, not chasing scale for its own sake.

"We’re not in a fleet race," she noted. "What matters more is ensuring our customers’ cargo moves on time, every time."

From ramping up spot vessel charters to ordering dual-fuel LNG ships, Maersk’s approach is rooted in service certainty — not size. As Silvia aptly put it, Maersk today is more like a startup: experimenting, listening, and constantly improving with the customer at the center.

In a world where unpredictability is the new normal, Maersk’s bet is clear: reliability wins.
