China Guoyu Shipyard Launches 50,000 DWT Tanker in Just 7.5 Months xinde marine news Chen Yang 2025-05-29 09:55

On May 25th, Guoyu Shipyard in Yangzhou marked a stunning comeback with the successful launch of its first 50,000 DWT chemical tanker, "MC GAEA". From steel cutting to launch, the build took just seven and a half months—setting a new world record for this vessel type.

Once burdened with RMB 2.6 billion in debt and trapped in bankruptcy proceedings, Guoyu Shipyard has now been fully revitalized under the leadership of DCL Investments, a leading asset management firm specializing in distressed enterprise restructuring and M&A in China. DCL now serves as the controlling shareholder, having led a court-approved restructuring plan in July 2024.

At the launch ceremony, Ms. Zheng Hualing, Chair of DCL Investments, praised the efforts of local authorities, the trust of shipowner clients, and the dedication of the shipyard team. “This isn’t just about a fast build—it’s about shared resilience, long-term belief, and the strength of China’s manufacturing base,” she said.

DCL Investments is widely recognized as a pioneer in China’s distressed asset sector, awarded “A Level Insurance Asset Manager” by the Insurance Asset Management Association of China in both 2020 and 2021.

With China's shipbuilding industry booming—new orders in 2024 up 58.8% YoY—Guoyu’s rebirth stands as a case study in how capital, strategy, and execution can breathe new life into industrial assets.
