CMA CGM Orders 12 More LNG Dual-Fuel Containerships in China Xinde Marine News Pang Kai 2025-02-14 17:31

CMA CGM continues to strengthen its fleet with two major new orders, securing a total of 12 dual-fuel LNG-powered containerships. The first contract, with Jiangnan Shipyard, consists of 8+4 vessels, each with a capacity of 18,000 TEU. These ships, with a price tag of approximately $207-208 million each, are slated for delivery between 2028 and 2029, bringing the total contract value close to $2.5 billion.

Earlier this year, CMA CGM signed a similar deal with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for 12 more 18,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels, valued at $2.59 billion. These new orders come on top of CMA CGM’s ongoing investments in green technologies, including a series of methanol-powered and dual-fuel LNG vessels, underlining the company's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Jiangnan Shipyard has been one of CMA CGM’s preferred partners in China since 2013, with the latest contract bringing the total number of ships ordered to 23. This includes landmark projects such as the world's first 23,000 TEU LNG-powered vessels. As part of its strategy, CMA CGM has also been exploring the option to build LNG-powered 11,000 TEU vessels, further reinforcing its leadership in the container shipping sector.

With a robust order book of 84 ships and a fleet capacity nearing 1.34 million TEU, CMA CGM is well-positioned as one of the most active players in the newbuild market. The company's total investment in dual-fuel vessels has already surpassed $18 billion, marking a significant milestone in its transition to more sustainable shipping operations.

As the industry continues its journey toward decarbonization, CMA CGM’s commitment to LNG and other low-carbon fuels sets a strong example for future maritime innovation.
