Econowind Surpasses 100 VentoFoil Units Sold – A Major Milestone for Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion xinde marine news Chen Yang 2025-02-05 17:18

Econowind has officially surpassed 100 VentoFoil units sold, marking a significant milestone in the global push towards sustainable shipping through Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP).

Since the first installation on MV Ankie in 2018, VentoFoil technology has been successfully deployed on bulk carriers, tankers, RoRo, and container vessels, driving measurable reductions in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Current Status:

32 units in operation
33 units in production or ready for installation
37 units scheduled for delivery in 2025
"Surpassing 100 units sold shows that wind power isn’t just a concept—it’s a proven, scalable solution for modern shipping," said Chiel de Leeuw, CCO of Econowind. "With rising fuel costs and stricter environmental regulations, shipowners are embracing VentoFoil as a key part of their decarbonization strategies."

The Growing Role of Wind-Assisted Propulsion in Decarbonization

According to DNV’s white paper on Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS), wind energy stands out as an unlimited, zero-carbon, and cost-free resource, making it a compelling option for shipowners navigating the complexities of GHG regulations. Recent advancements in WAPS technology have demonstrated 5–20% annual fuel savings, aligning perfectly with the growing demand for cost-effective decarbonization solutions.

DNV’s case studies further confirm that WASP technologies like VentoFoil can significantly support compliance with EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime, and CII regulations, helping shipowners reduce both operational costs and emissions.

Why VentoFoil?

· Lightweight, tiltable design for maximum flexibility
· Available in 10m, 16m, 24m, and 30m configurations
· Containerized and Flatrack options for easy transfer between vessels
· Boosts compliance through the Wind Reward Factor (WRF), lowering reported emissions

Scaling Up for a Sustainable Future

To meet rising demand, Econowind is expanding production at its Zeewolde facility, optimizing processes for faster delivery and increased capacity. This strategic growth positions Econowind to support the shipping industry’s accelerating transition to low-carbon operations.
