China COSCO Shipping Jointly Constructs First Commercial Green Methanol Project Xinde Marine News - Jialin Wu 2024-04-01 15:57

On March 30th, the first commercialized green methanol project of Shanghai Electric started. This is the first scale commercial operation of wind power coupled with biomass green methanol integration demonstration project invested and constructed by Shanghai Electric Group, the project was officially started in Taonan Green Energy Chemical Industry Park in western Jilin, China, aiming at helping to realize China's "double-carbon" emission reduction target and constructing a new type of energy structure, providing Shanghai Electric solutions.

China COSCO Shipping Group Co. and Shanghai Electric signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Shanghai on March 15, 2024. The two sides will be based in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta region, make full use of their respective advantages and resources, and carry out in-depth cooperation in the fields of green energy, shipping logistics, and new energy applications, etc.

Based on the rich renewable resources of wind energy and biomass energy in Taonan, China, the green methanol project builds "green new energy + green chemical industry" industry chain project. The project total investment 5.6 billion yuan, plans to build 250,000 tons of wind power coupling biomass system green methanol integration project, supporting the construction of new energy scale 680,000 kilowatts.

According to Shanghai Electric, the project will be implemented in two phases, the first phase of the construction of green methanol capacity of 50,000 tons, is scheduled to produce the first batch of qualified methanol in 2025, and in 2027 to achieve 250,000 tons of capacity to reach production.

Shanghai Electric is a leading energy equipment manufacturer in China, with deep technical accumulation in the field of green energy and sustainable development. The core technology process, equipment design and manufacturing capability of the whole chain of green methanol production, such as wind power generation equipment, photovoltaic equipment, electrolytic water hydrogen production equipment, carbon capture, biomass gasification, methanol synthesis, etc., are all utilized in the project.

It is worth mentioning that the technical route and related major equipment in the project have realized the first industrialized application at home and abroad.

China COSCO Shipping and Shanghai Electric would like to take this signing as a new start to explore the green and low-carbon business field together. The project marks an important milestone in the domestic application of methanol fuel.

“Shanghai electric is leading the industry in promoting the construction of benchmarking demonstration project “, Liu Ping, the Shanghai electric group president said,“Relying on the new energy equipment, green power hydrogen, biomass gasification, methanol synthesis and other green methanol industry chain technology reserves and synergistic advantages of diversified equipment, the project will open up the scale of preparation of green methanol technology routes. We will push forward the construction of the first commercialized green methanol project in China with high quality and standard as requirements. We will seize the first opportunity for future industrial development and cultivate new momentum for green development.”

To note, Shanghai Electric plans to roll out a green development of the shipping industry by demonstrating such carbon-free, safe and reliable fuel for the shipping industry. Shanghai Electric have made its mind to achieve the cooperation with China COSCO Shipping of promoting the development of China's "dual carbon" strategy and provide Chinese wisdom to reduce emissions for the world's shipping industry.
