China's new ultra-large container ship embarks on test cruise CCTV 2023-02-24 11:44

China's new generation of high-performance ultra-large container ship, "NACKS 335", set off on a test voyage from Nantong City of east China's Jiangsu province on Tuesday morning.

The mega vessel built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd, (NACKS) has a length of 399.99 meters, a width of 61.3 meters, a draft of 33.2 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of 228,000 tons. The ship can carry 24,188 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), one of the world's very largest carrying capacity, and its deck covers an area larger than three standard soccer fields.

Cutting-edge technologies and artificial intelligent facilities were applied in building the ship, making it a safe, energy-sufficient, environmental-friendly and smart vessel.

This ship, which leads the worlds in comprehensive performances, represents a new generation of high-performance ultra-large container ships that China independently developed and designed.

"It is the largest container ship navigating on the Yangtze River. The clearance height of the Sutong Bridge on the river is 62 meters, while the maximum height of this ship is 73 meters," said Zheng Xinpeng, deputy captain of Nantong Port sea patrol law enforcement brigade of Chonghai Maritime Safety Administration.

Considering its big size, the ship will lay the radar antenna down to pass the Sutong Bridge at the lowest tide level of the Yangtze River. To avoid traffic jam that may be caused by the large vessel, the local maritime authorities organized the ship's sea trials to ensure the smooth passage of the hull.

Ultra-large container ships refer to vessels with a nominal container capacity of 10,000 TEUs and over.

China remained the world's leading shipbuilder in 2022, grabbing the largest market share and making breakthroughs in high-end ship models. The country topped the globe in three major indicators, contributing 47.3 percent of global output, receiving 55.2 percent of new orders, and having 49 percent of holding orders, data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed.
