Sachit Sahoonja, CEO of Su-Nav announced the company’s official launch of operations in Dubai during the first quarter of 2023. The opening of the office reflects the growing importance of the Middle East to the company and is part of its strategy to be closer to its owners, stakeholders and suppliers both in the region and globally.
Su-Nav’s fleet is growing quickly and there are now 33 vessels under management with owners based in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Ahead of the office opening next year, Su-Nav organised a special event for partners and stakeholders in Dubai and Sahoonja shared his vision of building sustainable partnerships in order to protect the environment, generate equitable wealth, minimize depletion of natural resources, care for society and build gender equality within the workplace. Guests at the invitation-only event included suppliers, classification societies, flag states, OEMs, underwriters, owners, operators and agents.
Su-Nav’s rise to become a leading shipmanager has been based on a platform that has seafarer welfare at its heart as well as harnessing new technology through its own innovation laboratory.
“As a former seafarer I understand the challenges that we face to transform shipping to become a safe, inclusive industry in order to attract talented young people to join this dynamic and exciting industry,” said Sahoonja.
“It is important that we promote the best of shipping to the world, which has to include a sustainable future, supporting those who need care in society and gender equality.”
The company’s gender equality policy means that 40 percent of the staff employed on shore are women while at sea there has been a steady increase in female seafarers holding senior positions.
The company is also a strong proponent on providing seafarers with first-class working environments and living quarters while at sea as well as welfare and financial support packages for seafarer families suffering hardship. Su-Nav has one of the highest seafarer retention rates in shipmanagement.
Su-Nav is also the first ship manager to install air-water condensers on board one of its managed vessels which can harvest and purify water captured onboard the ship and generate between 150 to 100 litres of pure drinking water a day. This technology means eliminating 6,000 plastic bottles per vessel per year. The stainless-steel body also ensures longevity for use at sea.
“The seafarers are forced to consume water from tanks or plastic bottles received from different countries which results in various potentially harmful microbes in the gut. There is also the possibility of water contamination from fresh water being loaded into our tanks,” said Sahoonja.
