PIL contributes S$2 million to community and charitable causes Xinde Marine News 2022-10-18 10:04

To mark its 55th anniversary this year, Pacific International Lines (PIL) is committing S$2 million in financial contributions to community and charitable causes in Singapore.

In Singapore, the company has contributed S$1.7 million to four ethnic self-help organisations in Singapore. The Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) and Yayasan Mendaki (Mendaki) have each received S$500,000, while Eurasian Association (EA) has received S$200,000.

The donations were handed to the representatives of the four organisations by Mr S.S. Teo, Executive Chairman, PIL, at the company’s 55th Anniversary Community Donation Ceremony today, 17 October 2022.  Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, & Second Minister for Law, was the Guest of Honour at the ceremony.

Mr S. S. Teo, Executive Chairman, PIL, said, “This is our first significant community contribution to Singapore since PIL returned to financial health last year. We are grateful for the strong support which Singapore has given to PIL, which has enabled us to ride through the most challenging time in our history in the last few years.  By leveraging Singapore’s strengths, we are able to continue to progress in our journey as a robust and sustainable company.

We recognise the key role which the four self-help groups play in maintaining community harmony in Singapore. Singapore companies like PIL will only do well when Singapore continues to grow and prosper in a peaceful and stable environment.  As such, we would like to do our part to encourage the good work of CDAC, SINDA, Mendaki and EA.”

Looking ahead, PIL aims to continue to strengthen its efforts in corporate social responsibility. It plans to set up a foundation and is pledging S$300,000 as seed money for further charitable contributions.

Mr Lars Kastrup, CEO, PIL, added, “PIL continues to grow our container shipping business, and we are present in key regions around the world, in China, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Oceania.  With sustainability as our key goal, we are stepping up our efforts to be a responsible corporate citizen by contributing meaningfully to the communities in the regions where we operate.  At the end of the day, our aim is to make a lasting and positive impact on people and communities, leveraging on our strengths and competencies.”
