Green ship orders accounted for a record high in the first month Xinde Marine News Sarah Yu 2022-02-11 15:19

The pace of global energy reform is accelerating. Under the "dual carbon" goal, carbon emission reduction in shipping has become an inescapable issue for the industry, and a number of industry participants have begun to actively try for green shipping.

Not only has LNG as an alternative fuel become an ideal choice for shipowners, the research, development and application of other low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, green methanol, and biofuels are also constantly advancing.

In particular, after the MEPC77 meeting in 2021 determined the goals to be achieved by the carbon intensity indicator (CII) of ship operations, green ships are much "loved" by shipowners in the current new shipbuilding market.

According to Clarksons data, in January 2022, the global new ship order volume was 99 ships and 7.11 million DWT, of which LNG, methanol and other green low-carbon ships combined with traditional fuels accounted for 86%, the highest since 2014.

From the perspective of order structure, green ships have also expanded from the original LNG ships and LPG ships to the main ship types such as container ships, oil tankers, and bulk carriers.
