On November 29, Singapore's X-Press Feeders and two Chinese shipyards signed a contract for the construction of 16 1170TEU feeder container ships via remote video.
The new ship uses dual-fuel engines that can run on either regular fuel or methanol, with a high fuel efficiency design.
The two Chinese shipyards, New Dayang Shipbuilding and Ningbo Xinle Shipbuilding, respectively received orders for 8 container ships. The first of these new ships will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2023, and the last will be delivered before the end of 2024.
As Maersk orders a series of methanol-fueled container ships, X-Press Feeders has previously stated that it will try three fuels for the next generation of environmentally friendly ships: methanol, ammonia and nuclear energy.
The shipping industry has ordered a large number of ultra-large container ships this year, which has also created more opportunities for feeder ships at the other end. The latest round of newbuilding orders is concentrated on small container ships.
Last week, South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard announced that it had received an order for 10 2000TEU container ships worth US$627 million. Although the name of the shipowner was not disclosed, it was confirmed that it was CMA CGM. These ice-class 1A container ships are powered by dual-fuel LNG and are said to be operated in the Baltic Sea.
Earlier in September, Evergreen ordered 24 feeder container ships in Huangpu Wenchong, with a carrying capacity between 1800 and 3000 TEU, and the total contract price was nearly 1.1 billion US dollars.
