New container ship orders hit a record high xinde marine news Sarah Yu 2021-11-04 15:55

The boom in the containerized shipping market has led more and more shipowners to "run into the market" and place orders for new container ships. As a result, this year saw an unprecedented wave of orders.

New container ship orders in the first nine months have hit a 14-year high, and Chinese yards, with nearly 60% of orders, are undoubtedly the biggest winners.

Clarkson said in its latest report that container ship orders reached 473 vessels in the first three quarters of about 3.9 million TEU, already surpassing the previous annual order record of 3.4 million TEU in 2007.

It was also the highest number of new container ship orders since Clarkson began keeping order data in 1996.

Data showed that in the first three quarters of this year, 37 shipyards around the world received container ship orders, of which 26 were from China, while Chinese shipyards received 305 container ship orders of 2.23 million TEU, accounting for 57.01% in terms of TEU.

The top 10 Chinese yards for new container ship orders are Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, Hudong Zhonghua, Jiangnan Shipyard, DSIC, Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) , Guangzhou Shipyard International, CSSC Huangpu Wenchong, DACKS, and NACKS.

At the same time, container ship handheld orders continue to grow, rising sharply to 23% of the current fleet from 8% at the start of the fourth quarter last year, the highest level since 2014, though still down from 60% in 2008.

New deliveries are likely to reach record levels in the coming years, but ship-breaking remains a very important factor in fleet growth. Starting in 2023, the container ship market will see even greater fleet expansion, which is likely to lead to supply pressures.
