Container ship chartering rates fell for the first time this year! xinde marine news Sarah Yu 2021-11-04 15:10

The current container ship chartering rate is still 3 to 4 times that of the beginning of the year.

According to Howe Robinson Containership Index, six of the 18 indexes covering different ship types fell by 2.1% ~ 21.4% in the last week, and the rest were flat with the previous week. The overall index fell 3.5% to 4632 points from the previous week.

Among them, the ship type with the largest decline is the 1700TEU ship, which is mainly operated on routes in Asia and the Baltic Sea.

VHBS also mentioned in its weekly report that the average daily chartering rate for a container ship with a current six-month charter period is US$61,383, a decrease of US$2,438 from the previous week. The daily chartering rate for a 1700TEU vessel with a 12-month charter period is USD 48,538, which is USD 1,104 lower than the previous week.

This is the first time that the chartering rate of several container ship types have fallen this year.

However, the ship broker said that the current container ship chartering rate is still 3 to 4 times the beginning of the year. As the transportation demand in the container shipping market continues to exceed the supply of capacity, shipping companies are still looking for capacity, but the number of container ships available for chartering is decreasing.

VHBS also stated that the current short-term container ship chartering rate of about 5 months is no longer able to reach the previous ultra-high level.

Since the beginning of this year, container ship chartering rates have continued to rise. In September, even some short-term chartered container ships had daily prices of up to 200,000 US dollars. In comparison, the prices of the 24-month and 36-month long-term charter contracts are not so high, but they are also at historical highs.
