Container ships "lead" the new shipbuilding market xinde marine news Sarah Yu 2021-10-22 14:44

In the first three quarters of this year, new container ship orders surged 15 times year-on-year, and the number of new ship orders almost tripled from the same period last year. Driven by the unprecedented surge of container ship orders, the global new shipbuilding market is recovering rapidly, and the annual orders are expected to reach an 8-year high.

In September, global orders for 116 new vessels stood at 3.28 million CGT, according to Clarkson's latest data. Among them, China undertook 75 ships with 1.95 million CGT, with a market share of 60%; South Korea undertook 14 ships with 910,000 CGT, with a market share of 28%; Japan undertook 15 ships with 260,000 CGT, with a market share of 8%.

Statistics show that in the first nine months of this year, the cumulative trading volume of new ships in the world was 1259, with 37.54 million CGT, an increase of 184% over 13.22 million CGT in the same period last year and 257% over 10.53 million CGT in 2016, when the ship market was seriously depressed.

In terms of ship type, the number of container ships has increased by more than 15 times compared with the same period last year. The order volume in the first three quarters has reached 470 ships with 17.55 million CGT, compared with 120 ships with 4.33 million CGT in the whole year last year. The number of new container ship orders this year has set the highest record since Clarkson started counting in 1996, which has greatly promoted the increase in the overall ordering volume.

Clarkson expects 2021 to be the strongest year for new ship orders since 2013 (62 million CGT).
