Three people have been rescued after two ships collided at the mouth of the Yangtze River at 3:39 am Thursday, said the Shanghai maritime safety administration.
The rescue mission to locate 14 other missing individuals is still ongoing.
According to the administration, one of the ships "LONG QING 1",which was transporting 3,000 metric tons of gasoline, caught fire following the collision. The other vessel,"SHUN DA 11", which was carrying sands and rocks, sank.
The location of the collision is 1.5 nautical miles, or 2.8 kilometers, to the southeast of a light float at the mouth of the Yangtze River facing the East China Sea.
The Shanghai Maritime Search and Rescue Center has dispatched ships, helicopters and a fixed-wing plane to the site.
