China is to accelerate development of the shipbuilding industry and marine resources exploitation.
Shanghai's Changxing Island used to be an agricultural island dominated by citrus. However, it is one of the largest shipbuilding base in China.
"Marine engineering equipment industries featured by shipbuilding, ship maintenance and port machinery manufacturing account for 97.3 percent of the whole island's industrial output," said Chen Bin, director of the investment and planning department under the development and construction management committee of Changxing island.
China's three shipbuilding bases located in east China's Yangtze River Delta area and Bohai Bay Rim area and south China's Pearl River Delta are being formed.
"Sixty percent of China's marine equipment manufacturers achieved independent operation. Only a few countries in the world has such strong industrial base capability," said Sun Chongbo, senior engineer with the economic research center under China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation(CSIC).
As a shipbuilding leader, China is accelerating exploiting marine resources.
And a batch of high-end ships is helping China become a maritime power.
Songhang is China's first research vessel for fishery resources. The vessel's camera can take pictures of plankton 3,000 meters under sea and make identification automatically.
"Data on plankton is helpful on analyzing the region's marine resources and plays a positive role in guiding the development of deep-sea fishery," said Li Weijie, chief designer of Songhang.
Hai Yang Di Zhi Shi Hao is China's most advanced comprehensive geological research vessel. It's drilling capacity enables it to drill combustible ice in the South China Sea, according to its chief designer Yang Jun.
China's new submersible Shenhai Yongshi, or deep-sea warrior, is conducting various of experiments after the success of Jiaolong, China's other submersible, which is in service and has set a record dive of 7,062 meters in the Mariana Trench in June 2012.
"When we were developing Jiaolong, we were in the world's average level, but now, we are in the advanced level. In the future, we are going to be at the leading level," said Ma Bin, technical director of the 4,500-meter-deep water surface supporting system developed by the 701 research institute under China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.
