COSCO Surpassed Maersk Became the Biggest Container Line

In the third quarter, the Chinese carrier loaded 5.49 million-teu. According to data, the Chinese line increased 23% of containers loading in Q3 compared to the same period of last year. However, Maersk decreased 2.4%.

Maersk CEO Soren Skou expressed that carrier’ s liftings in the first two weeks of July decreased sharply as shippers turned to its competitors.

Maersk’s booking systems has gone through a 12-day IT shutdown caused by a cyber attack in the summer. Even allowing for a 200,000-teu loss, Maersk may lose its top position in the carrier volume.

Sources say once COSCO complete in acquiring OOCL, its position will be more stable and the Chinese liner in 2018 may become the top compare with other countries.
