Inmarsat——Driving Shipping’s Digital Transformation xinde marine news Anita Liu 2019-04-16 16:06

Inmarsat Maritime President Ronald Spithout held a press briefing on Wednesday, 10th April during Sea Asia 2019.

Ronald expressed that the role satellites continue to play in enabling maritime digitalization, as well as updates on the new IOT service Fleet Data and Fleet Secure cyber protection. He also introduced Crew Xpress- a new , fully- managed crew connectivity service that incentivises higher speed broadhand usage in vessel management.

Ronald introduced the emerging “Didital Society” at sea, he said, “a company or an industry is only constrained by its imagination, its ambition, and of course, its access to reliable communications.” For this purpose, Inmarsat launched Fleet Data-the IOT Platform for shipping, which is an end to end fleet scalable, cost effective ship-to-shore data automation, with one installation, one single cloud for ship operator, data collected one time only, bandwidth included-no hidden cost and data easy to share across multiple parties.

In addition, Ronald said that Crew Xpress benefits both crew and shipping company, with advantages of flexible payment options for crew or shipping company. It also removes the admin overhead by offering crew self service access via a onboard portal. You can refer to www.xindemarinenews.com/en/carrier/2019/0305/10684.html for more details.

During our interview to Ronald, he said: “We try to listen to the communities we serve, and we want ship managers to choose applications that they can use and not to worry about what happens in the background. In the same way, if you use applications on your phone or computer, you are not worried about the connection, and that is the stage we try to get into, together with maritime industry.”

“Crew must have social time onboard, even fishing vessels. For the fishing community, we do the same, even small fishing boat can have chat applications nowadays. We provide the service called Fleet One——very small terminal on very small boat, the principle is the same. It allows the crew to access a chat application”, he added.
