Shanghai Port Performs China's First Green Methanol STS Bunkering of Large Container Vessel

On 10th April 2024, celebration of 100th anniversary of Maersk's service for China foreign trade and the ceremony of China's first "ship-to-ship" bunkering of large green methanol enabled container vessel took place in Shanghai.

Since the Sally Maersk called in Shanghai in 1924, Maersk has been serving China's trade for 100 years, which is a remarkable journey.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Maersk's first vessel calling in Shanghai port, its 16,000 TEU green methanol dual-fuel Astrid Mærsk berthed at Shanghai Yangshan port for STS bunkering.

The bunkering operation means that Shanghai is the first port in China to be equipped with green methanol "ship-to-ship" bunkering capability, and one of the few ports in the world to be able to perform both green methanol and LNG "ship-to-ship" bunkering.

Mr Gu Jinshan, Chairman of SIPG, said: " With China's first green methanol bunkering of a large container vessel at the Port of Shanghai, Maersk and SIPG have taken a new step forward in their green and low-carbon co-operation , which promotes the Port of Shanghai to become a regional green methanol fuel bunkering hub."

"Maersk is working closely with all stakeholders, including SIPG, clients, industry peers and regulators, to step into the new frontier of sustainability and drive green shipping as an easier-to-implement option," said Mr Vincent Clerc, Chief Executive Officer of A.P. Moller - Maersk.

Astrid Mærsk is the second in Maersk's 18 large methanol-powered container vessels. The series of vessels is scheduled to be delivered and in operation between 2024 and 2025.
