World’s First 9,300-CEU Methanol Dual-Fuel Car Carrier Successfully Launched in China! xinde marine news Chen Yang 2025-05-22 16:33

On May 21, 2025, the world’s first methanol dual-fuel car carrier with a capacity of 9,300 vehicles was successfully launched at China Merchants Heavy Industry’s Nantong shipyard. Ordered by China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. (CMES), this milestone marks a major breakthrough in the construction of green, intelligent RoRo vessels.

Key specs:
Length: 219.9m | Beam: 37.7m | Draft: 10.2m
Design speed: 19 knots
Methanol dual-fuel main & auxiliary engines, boilers, and fuel supply system
Fully compliant with IMO TIER III emissions standards

This vessel is currently the largest methanol-powered RoRo ship under construction globally and represents the lead ship in CMES’s broader strategy to expand into the green automotive logistics market.

CMES has ordered a total of six methanol dual-fuel PCTCs:
Two 9,300-CEU ships ordered in early 2023
Four additional 7,800-CEU vessels ordered in late 2023
All ships are being built by China Merchants Heavy Industry and are scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2026.

As China rapidly scales up its auto exports, CMES is positioning itself as a key green carrier for global vehicle logistics — demonstrating both industrial ambition and environmental responsibility.

Green innovation meets industrial strength – powering the future of maritime logistics.
