China to promote railway, waterway freight transportation xinde marine news 2018-07-03 15:46

China will promote energy-efficient railway and waterway freight transportation instead of fuel-consuming highway transportation, so as to adjust the country's transportation system structure, said a senior official at a press brief held by China's State Council Information Office on Monday.

Liu Xiaoming, vice minister of the Chinese Ministry of Transport, said that the structure of the current comprehensive transportation system is irrational as the highway freight volume takes up as much as 78 percent of the total social volume of freight, while the railway freight volume only accounts for 7.8 percent.

According to Liu, the advantages of low cost and low energy consumption in railway and waterway transportation have not been fully realized. Therefore, the Ministry of Transport will promote railway and waterway transportation of bulk cargoes. Coal container ports including main coastal ports, Tangshan port and Huanghua port which currently are using highway transportation will have to adopt railway or waterway transportation by the end of this year.
