Taicang port in Jiangsu province saw a steady increase in its cargo throughput in the first five months of 2019, according to the port's management committee.

From Jan-May, the port handled 2.13 million containers, 93.57 million tons of cargo, and 30.37 million tons of foreign trade goods with respective year-on-year increases of 8.5 percent, 2.8 percent and 2.7 percent.

All the achievements Taicang port made in the first half of 2019 can be attributed to the high quality development it has experienced within the last year.

In 2018, the port launched another two Southeast Asian routes and increased its near-sea routes to 25, covering 23 ports in countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road.

It also increased its domestic trading routes to 52, connecting it with 21 ports in China. As of the end of 2018, the port was serving 200 different routes.

Last year, the port handled more than five million containers, a record high, moving it to first place in Jiangsu and 10th in China.
