Ningbo Containerized Freight Index Weekly Commentary (5.13-5.19)

India and Pakistan routes continue to rise, and the composite index fluctuates steadily
 
Ningbo Containerized Freight Index: In the week ending May-19, Ningbo Containerized Freight Index (NCFI) issued by Ningbo Shipping Exchange (NBSE) quotes 702.5 points, slightly up by 0.1% against last week. Meanwhile, eight of the selected twenty-one routes maintain an upward trend while other thirteen have fallen. In addition, according to the freight indices of the primary ports along the Maritime Silk Road, eight ports appear a constant rising tendency while other eight are declining.


Europe and Mediterranean routes: The fundamentals of supply and demand of Europe and Mediterranean routes continue to remain stable, and the spot market booking prices fluctuate stably. This week, freight index in the route from Ningbo-Europe quotes 539.6 points, down by 0.6% from one week ago. Freight indices in the routes from Ningbo to East Mediterranean and West Mediterranean quote 867.5 points and 1002.2 points, growing by 0.2% and having a decrease of 1.2% against last week respectively.


North America route: The transportation demand is still insufficient. Among them, the freight rate of the East America route basically remains stable because of the dry season of the Panama Canal, and the freight rate of the West America route continues to decline. This week, freight indices in the routes from Ningbo to East America and West America quote 785.7 points and 747.1 points, slipping by 0.6% and dipping by 4.9% from one week ago respectively.


Mideast route: The demand for shipping transportation has begun to improve, and the carriers have pushed up the freight rates slightly, and the freight rates on the shipping routes have rebounded slightly. This week, freight index in the route from Ningbo-Mideast quotes 961.2 points, having a week-on-week increase of 5.4% compared with last week.


India &Pakistan route: The volume of goods shipped in the market continues to rise, coupled with the control of shipping capacity by carriers, the space on the route is tight, and the booking price in the spot market continues to rise sharply. This week, freight index in the route from Ningbo to India &Pakistan route quotes 1076.3 points, up by 29.6% against last week.
