Ningbo Containerized Freight Index Weekly Commentary (5.8-5.14)

Transportation demand remained strong, and the composite index continued to rise
 
Ningbo Containerized Freight Index: In the week ending May-21, Ningbo Containerized Freight Index (NCFI) issued by Ningbo Shipping Exchange (NBSE) quotes 2884.8 points, slightly up by 2.0% against last week. Meanwhile, thirteen of the selected twenty-one routes maintain an upward trend while other eight have fallen. In addition, according to the freight indices of the primary ports along the Maritime Silk Road, eleven ports appear a constant rising tendency while other six are declining.

Europe and Mediterranean routes: The overall situation of the capacity  was still tight in this trade lane, The average slot utilization rate was close to full loaded. After the booking ratehit a new high last week, spot rate continued to rise slightly. This week, freight index in the route from Ningbo-Europe quotes 4330.0 points, increasing 1.1% from one week ago. Freight indices in the routes from Ningbo to East Mediterranean and West Mediterranean quote 3402.0 points and 4307.3 points, growing by 2.0% and rising by 1.0% against last week respectively.

North America route: The shortage of capacity and poor container turnover caused by the blockage of ships at the port of destination continued. This resulted in a tight supply and demand relationship between routes, and freight rates remained high. This week, freight indices in the routes from Ningbo to East America and West America quote 2044.7 points and 2737.7 points, increasing by 1.2% and dipping by 0.2% from one week ago respectively.

Mideast route: The relationship between supply and demand in the market was stable, the shipping space of the route was tight. Therefore, the freight rate fluctuates slightly this week. This week, freight index in the route from Ningbo-Mideast quotes 2508.4 points, down by 1.1% compared with last week.
East South America route: The strong transportation demand had pushed the loading rate of the routes to a high level, and the carriers had successively pushed up the freight rates after the middle of the year. This week, freight index in the route from Ningbo to East South America quotes 4579.8 points, up by 14.9% against last week.
