Hong Kong-flagged boxship moored at Cape Town after fire

The Hong Kong registered 4250-teu Cosco Sao Paulo was escorted into Table Bay, Cape Town early this week following a report of fire in one of the holds off Cape Agulhas on Monday.

Initially anchored off Cape Town’s Atlantic seaboard amid rough seas, the vessel subsequently lost containers overboard. The search for the lost containers were continuing as of 28 May.

Another fire on a containership will be seen as a setback. After reaching a staggering figure of up to one incident every 60 days, there has been a reduction in cases in recent months following high profile calls for action from the International Union of Marine Insurers, International Chamber of Shipping, and The International Group of P&I Clubs.

Meanwhile Cosco again appeared among the casualties when company’s Cofco 1 ran aground twice this week on the Parana River in Argentina. The vessel first ran aground on Monday after leaving Timbues port. Following its refloating with tug assistance the following day, the vessel grounded again on Wednesday. The latest reports indicate that the vessel is still grounded.

The ship operated by Cosco Shipping Bulk was heading to Denmark with a 40,000 ton load of soybean.
