The construction project of Brazilian Port of Sao Luis is progressing smoothly, which will create 3,000 jobs when it is completed.
The Port of Sao Luis is the most important deep-water port for bulk cargoes in the northeastern part of Brazil. It is jointly contracted by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and the Brazilian companies WPR, a branch of the Brazilian company WTorre, and Lyon Capital, with CCCC holding 51 percent of the stake.
"We are now working on the geological prospecting. The ground-breaking ceremony of this project was held on March 16. Currently, we are focusing on site formation and geological prospecting. I should say the project just started," said Li Ke, Chinese manager of the joint venture for general contracting of the Sao Luis Port Project.
The port is built on a complex terrain, starting from a forest and stretching to the ocean, which brings great difficulty to the construction. "The biggest difficulty of the project lies in its location which is on a 500-meter-long shoal. As a result, it [the water level] could not meet any construction ship's draught, so the ship could not work. Thus, we introduced the technology of walking-pedrail platform developed by CCCC to overcome the difficulty, so that we can complete the port project within the limited time," said Li.
Before carrying out the construction, the project contractors has conducted a five-year environment evaluation to eliminate any damages to the ecological environment."Just as you mentioned, now, we are viewing the scene [of construction].
In fact, we have conducted an environment evaluation of our project since five years ago. We employed a professional third party to evaluate our work. We have protectively migrated the animals and plants in the 200 hectares of the project-covered area. With five years' effort, our environment evaluation has been acknowledged by the federal and state government. We've got the permission. Thus, we can see the busy scene here," said Li.
Upon completion, the port together with the railways will form a multimodal transport bub which will promote the development of the central region. "Our port is located at the northeastern part of Brazil. In the future, the main cargoes we will deliver are grains. The new grain producing areas are transferring to the north and northeast. These areas will benefit from our port. Moreover, the port can link with the railway behind, forming a multimodal transport system which will directly promote the production of seven states in the central region," said Li Ruida, director of Brazilian Port of Sao Luis Corp.
Apart from promoting the development in the central region, the project will also create 3,000 jobs for Brazil."The project will create 3,000 jobs directly and indirectly. It is important for Brazil, as Brazil needs to increase employment to walk out from the economic recession," said Ricardo, Brazilian manager of the joint venture for general contracting of the Sao Luis Port Project.
