Shanghai Jinjiang Shipping Group, a leading player in the Chinese container shipping industry(a subsidiary of Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG)) , has announced its plan to build 2+2 eco-friendly 1100TEU feeder container vessels. The project, currently open for tender, marks a significant step in the company's ongoing efforts to strengthen its fleet and expand its regional shipping capabilities.
The new vessels are set to meet the growing demand for flexible, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport options in Asia’s dynamic trade routes. With specifications including a length of 147.90 meters, a beam of 23.25 meters, and a cruising speed of approximately 18.5 knots, the vessels will be designed for international operations, primarily serving East Asia and Southeast Asia routes.
This move aligns with Jinjiang Shipping Group’s broader strategy to invest in smaller, versatile vessels amid a growing demand for feeder container ships. The increasing focus on regional routes and efficient supply chains has led to a surge in orders for such vessels, with global shipowners actively looking to expand their feeder fleets. This aligns with the trend seen with other prominent shipping players such as Minerva Marine and Heidmar, who have been aggressively acquiring similar vessels to cater to the market.
Strategic Expansion into Southeast Asia
Jinjiang Shipping Group’s focus on regional markets is also evident in its recent partnership with Gemadept Corporation to form a joint venture logistics company in Vietnam. This collaboration strengthens the company’s position in Southeast Asia, reinforcing its regional shipping network and enhancing its logistics capabilities to serve a growing market.
In addition, Jinjiang Shipping’s recent launch of the "Ho Chi Minh Silk Road Express" (SSX) route further exemplifies its commitment to providing fast, reliable shipping solutions between Southeast Asia and China. This new service, promising 4-5 day delivery times, underscores Jinjiang’s dedication to meeting the diverse needs of its customers and expanding its presence in this key market.
A Bright Future for Feeder Vessels
With global shipping fleets aging and the demand for regional transport surging, feeder container vessels have become increasingly attractive investments. As part of the broader trend, the demand for 1,700-4,300TEU vessels continues to rise, with significant orders coming from shipowners eager to capitalize on the benefits of smaller, more agile ships suited for regional hubs and dense port networks.
Jinjiang Shipping’s move to expand its fleet with eco-friendly and high-efficiency feeder vessels positions the company well to leverage these market dynamics and secure a stronger foothold in the region.
