COSCO SHIPPING marked a new milestone in its decarbonization journey with the naming of its third methanol dual-fuel containership — COSCO SHIPPING PANAMA — at Yangzhou COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry on July 18.
Ms. Xu Hui officiated the naming ceremony by christening the vessel, joined by executives from COSCO SHIPPING Lines, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, China Classification Society, and key partners.
Vessel highlights:
Length: 366 meters | Beam: 51 meters
Capacity: 16,136 TEU
Equipped with an 11,000 cbm methanol storage tank
Powered by a domestically developed methanol dual-fuel engine
Includes methanol-fueled boiler and gensets for full system integration
Unlike its two predecessors (COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU and COSCO SHIPPING CARNATION), which required post-delivery retrofits, COSCO SHIPPING PANAMA is methanol-ready upon delivery — enabling immediate alternative fuel use.
The first ship in the series, COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, was delivered in June and has already bunkered over 1,600 tons of green methanol across ports in Shanghai, Yangpu, and Dalian before heading on its maiden voyage to the U.S. West Coast.
With the upcoming N1074 and more vessels to follow, COSCO SHIPPING continues to advance its green fleet strategy — embracing methanol as a scalable, flexible fuel for the future of global shipping.
