China's first support ship customized for the domestically developed 10,000-meter-deep manned submersible was launched in Mawei District of Fuzhou City in east China's Fujian Province on Sunday.

The ship has a total length of 87.2 meters, a width of 18.8 meters, a moulded depth of 7.4 meters, a trial speed of 14.3 knots and a displacement of 7,000 tons. Designed and constructed by Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding Ltd., the ship adopts electric propulsion with level-two power positioning capability. The ship is fitted with rudder propellers and telescopic side thrust with the endurance exceeding 15,000 nautical miles.

After a brief launching ceremony, the support ship was towed by a tugboat and safely undocked. Then the crew conducted outfitting and some adaptive modifications on the support ship.

"In the future, it will adapt to our scientific investigation in deep and high seas, as well as the experimental capacity of engineering technology," said Tang Gulashan, director of Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

As a domestically developed large-scale experimental and applicable vessel, the support ship will be able to meet the needs of comprehensive scientific investigation and engineering technology experiment in deep and high seas after the completion of the construction and adaptive transformation of the original ship.

"In particular, this ship firstly has the ability to conduct general survey in deep and high seas. Secondly, it is capable of supporting operations of manned submersible HOV (human occupied vehicle), unmanned submersible ROV (remote operated vehicle), UUV (unmanned underwater vehicle), and AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle), which refers to the autonomous underwater vehicle, glider underwater and lander," said Tang.
