On September 29, the first of two 740-TEU pure electric container vessels for Ningbo Ocean Shipping was successfully launched at Jiangxin Shipyard in Jiangxi, marking a major step in the construction of the world’s largest and China’s first pure electric seagoing vessel.
This groundbreaking project represents Ningbo Ocean’s commitment to China’s “dual carbon” strategy and the promotion of sustainable, low-carbon shipping.
Vessel Highlights:
Capacity: 742 TEU
Dimensions: 127.8m length, 21.6m beam, 10.5m depth, 6.2m design draft
Propulsion: 10 containerized battery units enabling high-voltage shore charging and fast battery-swapping modes
Operations: Full zero emissions during sailing, port calls, and cargo handling
Smart systems: Equipped with an intelligent integrated platform and smart engine room supporting autonomous navigation, real-time situational awareness, collision avoidance, and multiple driving modes
Following hull completion and launch, the vessel will undergo outfitting, quay trials, and sea trials, with delivery scheduled for early 2026.
Ningbo Ocean continues to integrate energy-saving and green development into its entire fleet planning and operations. As of now, 29 green and energy-efficient vessels already account for 54.7% of its owned fleet.
Once delivered, the 740-TEU pure electric vessels will optimize fleet structure, enhance service capacity, and strengthen contributions toward China’s dual carbon goals.
A milestone not just for Ningbo Ocean, but also for the global shipping industry as it accelerates towards a greener, smarter future.
