Milestone Voyage: Shandong Ocean Shipping Launches Its First RCEP International Feeder Service

On July 15, the container ship M.V. Shangang Qingdao departed from Qingdao Port (QQCT), officially marking the launch of Shandong Ocean Shipping Group’s first international feeder service within the RCEP region (Indonesia–Malaysia).

Branded under the “Shangang Express” service, this new route directly connects Southeast Asia’s manufacturing hubs with international gateway ports—offering a stable, cost-efficient, and responsive solution for intra-Asian trade. The service will be operated on a liner schedule, with the first port call at Port Klang and full operations between Indonesia and Malaysia beginning August 1.

M.V. Shangang Qingdao:
118m LOA | 712 TEU capacity
Dual-purpose multipurpose vessel design
IMDG-compliant for dangerous goods transport
Optimized for high-turnover, refrigerated cargo-heavy Southeast Asia feeder markets
This development reinforces Shandong Ocean Shipping's ambition to expand its global footprint, following its corporate restructuring in July 2024 into a joint-stock company. The company is backed by Shandong Port Group and has grown rapidly since 2020, with strengths in container, bulk, and Ro-Ro shipping.

Notably, Shandong Ocean Shipping also:
Entered the Middle East market via a strategic partnership with Dubai's Sharaf Group (Oct 2024)
Ordered two 95,500 DWT bulk carriers from Hengli Heavy Industry, signaling expansion into large dry bulk
The new RCEP feeder is more than just a route—it’s a strategic move toward building a world-class ocean port cluster, supporting China’s “maritime power” vision and bolstering regional supply chain resilience under the RCEP framework.
